Sport:Charity Cup helps football come to homeless

The Metro RAHU Charity Cup involving nine teams will kick off at 9am this Sunday at the newly built Beeline Arena close to Norton University on Chhroy Changvar peninsula. The day-long five-a-side tournament has been organised annually for the past three years by former Scottish footballer and head coach of Happy Football Cambodia, Australian Jimmy Campbell, to raise funds for the participation of a Cambodian team in the Homeless World Cup. This year’s edition is being held in Mexico City. The nine competing teams on Sunday have been named as Metro RAHU FC, Emaxx, Beeline, Ezecom, Paddy Rice, KPMG, HFCA, Copenhagen FC and Phnom Penh Celtic. Apart from a shining trophy for the winners, the side judged the fairest in the competition will get the Emaxx Fair Play award. “This year’s event promises to be the biggest yet and is being played at the best indoor stadium in Cambodia – the Beeline Arena,” Campbell told the Post yesterday. Funds raised from the event will go directly to HFCA, a charity organisation working with five partner orphanages around the capital to promote football among disadvantaged teenagers. “We hope to raise enough money to keep our weekly programme going and we also hope to send a team to compete in this year’s Homeless World Cup that will be held in Mexico City in October,” added Campbell. The HFCA has sponsored Cambodian teams to attend Homeless World Cups in Milan, Rio de Janeiro and Paris over the past three years. The Metro RAHU Charity Cup final is slated for 3pm on Sunday.
