Salty Crabs face a Sela Meas test

The all-Cambodian Sela Meas will have their work cut out for them when they face unbeaten Sabay Salty Crabs whose growing strength has been their hard-to-crack defence. The inaugural Cambodia Basketball Challenge presented by Banzai and Sabay enters its sixth week at the Beeline Arena on Saturday with the Crabs holding all the aces as the only side to make each week a winning one. So far they have killed the best of offence with their own brand of unflinching defence while wisely using their attacking options and the depth of the bench to do just enough to clinch victories. Though Sela Meas have been blowing hot and cold with three wins and two defeats, the resolute fashion with which they handled Team Sharky in a nail baiting finish last week should send a stern message to the Crabs that they could well have a battle on their hands. Speed and swift passing have been two pleasing Sela Meas features. If these traits play out well, the Crabs could be in trouble. Sok Pagna has the ability to split the tightest of defences while Phon Chandara has been a steadying influence. Sok Samnang came into his own last week and the Sela Meas destiny rests on this trio. The Crabs could again be looking at the imposing presence of Sean Looney to cause a flutter or three and bank on the long range shooting skills of Monh Ratana on their own breakaways. A tight and testy encounter it may well be for both the Crabs and Sela Meas, with the heat squarely on the Crabs to defend their five-game winning streak. Raid-Alaxan FR and Phnom Penh Dragons open the four-game schedule on Saturday with both sides capable of running the break. An exciting fare is on the cards. The day’s toughest clash will likely be the one between Team Sharky and Mobitel XG Warriors. There are enough big men on both sides to ensure fierce exchanges at either end. For the struggling HTPS Mike’s Burger Knights, here comes a chance to make up some lost ground when they take on the CCPL Heat. However, the Heat on paper hold a distinct edge over their rivals.

Ronaldo no to City

Cristiano Ronaldo has vowed he will never join Manchester City while Alex Ferguson is still boss at United. Real Madrid’s £80million star is unhappy at the Bernabeu — and that has alerted big-spending City. But a source close to Ronaldo, 27, said: “Cristiano has always been close to Alex Ferguson and even now they still talk. Cristiano simply would not risk hurting him by joining Ferguson’s immediate rivals.” Ronaldo recently spelt out just what Ferguson meant to him. He said: “When I arrived at United I was 18 and Sir Alex was like a father to me. He taught me many things. I worked with him for six years and he is a great human, a great coach. Sir Alex and Jose Mourinho are the two best coaches in the world.” But Ronaldo is now unhappy with Mourinho’s Madrid as he wants a new deal worth £25m a year. The Express says Premier League chairmen will meet today to consider a range of potential financial controls to limit spending by top-flight clubs that would further reflect UEFA’s plans for Financial Fair Play. The league’s top executives have produced a discussion paper on financial controls for the chairmen to consider, which could eventually lead to clubs being forced to break even every year or face sanctions. This is a follow-up from a discussion that took place earlier in the summer. Of course, many of today’s papers also include United’s decision to sign South American striker Angelo Henriquez from Universidad de Chile. Although the deal was originally announced a few weeks ago, it was only officially confirmed on Wednesday. (Source:ChinaBuzz)

Sport:Crown seek host of victories

Phnom Penh Crown will look to advance from the group stage of the 2012 AFC President’s Cup for the second successive season as hosts. The Cambodian league champions will get their campaign under way at 1:30pm tomorrow at Olympic Stadium against Yeedzin FC of Bhutan. Kyrgyzstan kings Dordoi Bishkek and Nepal Police Club will then play at 4:30pm in the other Group B clash of the day. Crown are making their fourth appearance in the regional club competition sanctioned by the Asian Football Confederation, and follow an historic run last year that took them all the way to the final in Taiwan. Despite losing 3-2 to home side Taiwan Power Company in a ill-tempered match, it was the best result for any Cambodian outfit in the tournament. Khemara Keila reached the semifinal in 2006. Bhutanese A-League side Yeedzin are the lowest ranked of the four-team Group B, having struggled in previous editions and conceded many goals. In their last meeting at Startak Stadium in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, in 2009, Crown defeated Yeedzin 3-1. Defender Tieng Tiny and striker Chan Chhaya are surviving members of the Crown squad during that time. Although they have encountered a stuttering start to their Metfone C-League title defence over the past two months, Crown coach David Booth remains confident of regaining their blistering form of last year. “Our form has been up and down in the league, but I think its the nature of the competition that the President’s Cup brings out the best in our players,” he told the Post yesterday. “We need to find consistency and play with agression. As we are playing at home, we have a good following and I hope it is enough to lift our team. But we [still] have to perform. We’ve made a lot of mistakes in the league and we need to cut them out.” The 63-year-old Englishman revealed they had been busy preparing for their upcoming Cup fixtures since their 3-1 defeat at the hands of Kirivong Sok Sen Chey last Sunday. “The last match didn’t go very well. Our squad have picked up a few knocks and injuries. Emmanuel Frimpong took a bad kick to his foot during our last game, and he got hit again in the same place during training, so he’s doubtful. Another foreign player, Tony [Obadin], has a slight injury ... but he’ll be OK. “We will employ a similar formation to what I use for domestic games. Its been proven as the best way for them to play well, and we cant change it so quickly.” Three training fields have been marked out for use for Crown and the visiting teams – the pitch at Olympic Stadium, Phnom Penh Crown FC field in Tuol Kork district and Cambodia Mekong University field in Teuk Thla district. Match commissioners include Chuang Chin Fan from Taiwan, Huang Song of China and referee assessor Liu Tiejun of China. The five match officials, all with experience in their own domestic leagues and regional competitions, hail from Qatar, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia and Saudi Arabia, and will be joined by six assistant referees.

Sport:Charity Cup helps football come to homeless

The Metro RAHU Charity Cup involving nine teams will kick off at 9am this Sunday at the newly built Beeline Arena close to Norton University on Chhroy Changvar peninsula. The day-long five-a-side tournament has been organised annually for the past three years by former Scottish footballer and head coach of Happy Football Cambodia, Australian Jimmy Campbell, to raise funds for the participation of a Cambodian team in the Homeless World Cup. This year’s edition is being held in Mexico City. The nine competing teams on Sunday have been named as Metro RAHU FC, Emaxx, Beeline, Ezecom, Paddy Rice, KPMG, HFCA, Copenhagen FC and Phnom Penh Celtic. Apart from a shining trophy for the winners, the side judged the fairest in the competition will get the Emaxx Fair Play award. “This year’s event promises to be the biggest yet and is being played at the best indoor stadium in Cambodia – the Beeline Arena,” Campbell told the Post yesterday. Funds raised from the event will go directly to HFCA, a charity organisation working with five partner orphanages around the capital to promote football among disadvantaged teenagers. “We hope to raise enough money to keep our weekly programme going and we also hope to send a team to compete in this year’s Homeless World Cup that will be held in Mexico City in October,” added Campbell. The HFCA has sponsored Cambodian teams to attend Homeless World Cups in Milan, Rio de Janeiro and Paris over the past three years. The Metro RAHU Charity Cup final is slated for 3pm on Sunday.

Sport:Davis Cup's Mam brothers bid farewell

After playing stellar roles in Cambodia’s dream Davis Cup debut in Doha last month, singles pivot Mam Panhara and his brother Vetu are heading back to their Oregon home in the United States tomorrow.More than a week after their return to Phnom Penh from Qatar, where Cambodia earned promotion to Asia Oceania Group III next year, the siblings are preparing to bid farewell to the tennis community here. A warm reception from family members and friends awaits them when they touch down in Oregon, where both have enjoyed great success in college tennis. The brothers can also expect an equally emotional send off from a host of admirers in the Kingdom. They both admitted their winning moments in Doha would remain with them forever as one of the greatest one-week periods in their tennis lives. “Our Mission to Doha is indeed a game changer for Cambodian tennis and in many ways it has also changed our own paths in life. We strongly feel that bonding with Cambodia, we are proud to belong to and so privileged to serve,” said Mam Panhara, who like Bun Kenny remained unbeaten in all the five singles rubbers he played during the Davis Cup week. “It was indeed great team work. Tep Rithivit as non-playing captain was a one-man inspirational force. Braen Aneiros was outstanding as the team coach and Kenny poured his heart out and played at a high we had not seen before,” added Panhara. “We both are going back to teaching, but tennis will remain our main focus.” Rich compliments for Panhara came in from coach Aneiros. “Panhara gave us a splendid start in each one of those five ties by giving us that 1-0 advantage, which took a load off Kenny following on,” said the coach. “If you look at his score-lines, they are all straight set wins, but in some of those he had hard battles and he stayed right on top of them. He was as determined as he was tough through the week considering that he didn’t have much match play behind him in the months before. “Looking at the future, I feel that the brothers could form a good doubles team given more match play experience. Ideally one of them can also partner Kenny,” added Ameiros. Non-playing captain and Tennis Federation of Cambodia Secretary General Tep Rithivit also lauded the pair’s performances in Doha. “The Mam brothers perfectly fitted into our scheme of things. Their contributions were invaluable. They will keep riding with us,” he said. Unlike Panhara, who played a lead role, Mam Vetu was restricted to doubles, which he seemingly revelled in. “I was quite happy to chip in for the team when they wanted me to. My brother and Kenny were sweeping the ties and we had little to worry with the doubles,” Vetu told the Post. The Mam brothers will almost certainly be back in Phnom Penh this November when the TFC hosts three back-to-back ITF Men’s Futures.

Sport:Kirivong stun champs 3-1, Naga blast to the top in rout

Reigning Metfone C-League champions Phnom Penh Crown, who have one eye on next weekend’s participation in the 2012 AFC President’s Cup group stage at home, suffered another dent to their title defence by losing 3-1 to Kirivong Sok Sen Chey yesterday at Olympic Stadium. Egyptian signing Mohammed Zaki settled the nerves of his Takeo-based club with a fourth-minute opener. Team-mate Em Phanna then bolstered his side’s advantage on 80 minutes with the 100th league goal of the 2012 Metfone C-League campaign. Em Phanna put the game beyond doubt with his team’s third in the fourth minute of stoppage time, although Crown sneaked one back a minute later via an Ouk Sothy header. In yesterday’s late kickoff, Hun Sen Cup holders Preah Khan Reach were forced to fight back from two goals down to grab a 2-2 draw against league newcomers Boeung Ket Rubber Field. The Kampong Cham outfit took the initiative with a brace from Nigerian recruit Nwakuna Friday in as many minutes. His first, a header on 33 minutes, was rapidly doubled to put Boeung Ket firmly in the driving seat. However, the Military Police-backed club were not to be outdone, and launched a comeback through the ever-reliable boot of Khuon Laboravy on 71 minutes. A Prak Mony Odom strike a short while later set up an exciting finish, although neither side managed to eke out a winner to finish with points shared. Naga rampage, BBU edge Army On Saturday, Naga Corp blasted themselves to the top of the standing thanks to a 8-1 thrashing of Chhlam Samuth, while Build Bright United bounced off the bottom by inflicting a first defeat of the season on National Defence Ministry. BBU had frontman Pich Sena to thank as saviour with his 85-minute strike proving decisive in their tepid 1-0 victory over the Army team. In a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it encounter later between two-time league champions Naga and floundering Navy-affiliated Sea Sharks, the result seemed a foregone conclusion just 10 minutes in. Om Thavarak got the ball rolling with a goal after three minutes, with Naga’s Kenneth Nwafor doubling their lead moments later. Choun Chum then grabbed his first of four via the penalty spot on 10 minutes. A treble of goals in the second half confirmed Choun Chum as the early frontrunner for the season’s golden boot award with a haul of 11 from seven games so far. Strikes by Sun Sovanrithy and Teab Vathanak either side of the break meant Naga were never out of their comfort zone, although an 81-minute goal by Chhlam Samuth’s Ros Somoeurn offered scant consolation to the team now cemented to the foot of the table.

Sport:King Ta Express FC delivers

Just three rounds left and the tension is palpable in both the English Premier League and its virtual accompaniment, the PPP/CTN Fantasy League. With leaders Man United slipping up spectacularly for a 4-4 draw against Everton, and cross-town rivals Man City keeping up the pressure with a 2-0 win over Championship-bound Wolves, this weekend’s Manchester derby will be compulsive viewing for all football fans. Bolton, seemingly inspired by the saga of Fabrice Muamba, have put in stout performances of late, and their double header in gameweek 35 gave ample opportunity for major points hauls. Top of the list was their Bulgarian midfield rock Martin Petrov with a tally of 17 points spread over the two games. Petrov scored once and set up another during his outings, while his midpark colleague Chris Eagles did the same for 16 points and a place in the Dream team. Sharing MVP status with Petrov was Newcastle’s Yohan Cabaye. The French international, however, grabbed all of his 17 points from just one match thanks to a brace and assist. To round off a sparkling midfield in the elite eleven, Man United’s Nani was back to his best with a goal and two assists for 15 points. Our weekly competition saw King Ta Express FC rush in to take the spoils with a total of 84 points. Managed by delivery man Sopheak Dean, the squad featured lucrative captaincy of Man United’s Wayne Rooney for 26 points, while Petrov and Nani were also included. Sopheak Dean’s side had remained completely unchanged since January 28 and, like a broken clock, it eventually came good with time. Sopheak picks up either an internet dongle or US$20 phone voucher in addition to a T-shirt from sponsors Cellcard. The upcoming bumper edition that is gameweek 36 encompasses the standard weekend set of fixtures, and four extra ties the following midweek. Obviously all eyes will be trained on the top of the table clash and potential title decider between the Manchester giants on Monday night, but spare a thought for players in Liverpool, Fulham, Stoke, Everton, Chelsea, Newcastle, Bolton and Tottenham, who are set to play two games each. Transfer deadline is the usual 5:30pm Cambodian time on Saturday afternoon.
